Frugal Darling's Favorite Deals of 2010

Since it's almost the New Year, I thought I'd list some of my favorite frugal finds and coupon deals of 2010. Keep in mind that I've only been extreme couponing since July. And I didn't start this blog until August. Here we go...
  • My 1st CVS shopping trip. Sometime in early July. My sister and her husband sent me the link to the Hip2Save website. I got 19 items for $22 dollars. 3 of the items were completely FREE. Looking back, it wasn't a very impressive trip, but it was enough to hook me!
  • When the Randalls customer service rep wrote me an "IOU" catalina on my receipt. LOL!!
  • All the many trips I made to CVS where I walked out having made more money than I spent!! Like this trip! Or this trip. Or this trip. Or this one where I practically drool over CVS -- sheesh! Obsessed much?? Or maybe this one? LOL There were way too many. CVS is absolutely this couponer's favorite store of the year!
What were your favorite deals in 2010?

Walmart Run: FREE Yogurt + Febreze Luminary!

While we were at Walmart tonight stocking up on goodies for our "appetizer dinner", I couldn't help but take another look to see if I could find the febreze Luminary sets with the Bonus Magazine tags on them. You'll remember with this Magazine offer, you can choose to take a Year Subscription to a magazine, or a $12 refund. All the other stores I've checked so far didn't have them, but this Walmart had LOTS of them!! Yah!! Here's what I got...

1 febreze Flameless Luminary Starter Kit @ $14.87
- $5/1 coupon from the P&G Brand Sampler Booklet
Paid: $9.87
Will Submit for $12 refund with code found on Bonus Offer Tag
Final Cost: FREE + $2.13 moneymaker!
** There's also a $4/1 coupon in the Home Made Simple "Organize in Style" Booklet

1 febreze Flameless Luminary Refill @ $4.92
- FREE refill wyb Starter Kit coupon 11/28 P&G (expires today!)
Final Cost: FREE!!

4 Athenos Greek Yogurts @ $1 each
- 2) $2/2 IP
Final Cost: 4 FREE!!

I was a little sad to see the luminary kits were priced higher than I've seen them before, or online prices, but at least I got a FREE refill out of it. And I love the Willow Blossom Scent -- can't wait to try it out!

So I got everything in the picture for FREE + $2.13 moneymaker!

Mailbox Goodies!!

So, have you been getting lots of FREE samples in the mail? Mine have slowed down, it seems, probably because I was so busy over the holidays. But here's what came in over the last few weeks....
I'm saving those Excedrin coupons for the Spend $20, get $10 ECB sale at CVS next week! Should make for a decent moneymaker, especially if the other coupons I ordered come in this week. What have you gotten lately?

Our New Year's Eve Tradition + Coupons!!

Here at our house, our New Year's Eve tradition is to stay home with our children. We have a massive feast of appetizers for dinner -- real food is not allowed! I let the children help plan the menu and we all go shopping together. It's one of those rare chances for the children to choose whatever they want, even if they might be more expensive than Momma generally likes -- and even if Momma doesn't have a coupon for it! The kids stay up late and put off fireworks with their Dad. It's fun, laid-back, only the 5 of us, and we all look forward to it -- probably even more than the hectic holiday celebrations!

Here are some of the coupons I'll be using today after putting our menu together...

$1/1 Hillshire Farms Cocktail Links
$1/2 Pillsbury Crescent Rolls from the 12/24 or 11/7 SS
$1/1 Farm Rich Frozen Snacks
$2/2 Farm Rich products from the 8/29 SS
$1/3 Ro-Tel Diced Tomatoes
$1/1 Grande Tortilla Chips from the 09/26 SS
$1/1 Tyson Anytizers from the 11/7 SS

Can you tell what goodies we'll be feasting on tonight? What's YOUR New Years Eve tradition?

$0.35 Martha White Muffin Coupon = FREE!

The .35/1 coupon on any 1 Martha White Baking Mix is available again!! This one triples at both Randall's and Kroger, and since the muffin mixes are usually priced around $1, this coupon makes them FREE!! My family loves to get the Banana Nut flavor! It's a great way to utilize your overripe bananas -- just mash and throw into the mix! Makes for a yummy breakfast treat. :D

(If you don't see this coupon, try using zip code 90210)

Cascade Stock-Up at Walgreens!!

$3.21 TOTAL!!

I think I've expressed before how frustrated I've been that there are virtually NO deals on dishwasher detergent. Since starting couponing back in June, I've never once seen a stock-up deal on the stuff. Occasionally, there might be a deal on the tabs or "pac" type detergents, but I can't use those with my dishwasher. And the $0.25 off coupons they put out for Cascade usually don't make a dent. So I've been buying my detergent practically at full price -- usually store brand, clearance, or "cheapest I can find that day" every few weeks when I run out.

So I was putting together my shopping list today - hoping to use up a few coupons before they expire - and I had a revelation!! ANYTHING can be a good deal... as long as you use the moneymaker from another deal to pay for the item you want. I knew there was a great money-maker opportunity on Vicks Sinex this week at Walgreens, and even though I personally don't need anymore Sinex, I could use the money I made from that deal to pay for my Cascade. Here's how I ran it!!!! <--- Three exclaimation points! Can you tell I'm excited??

Transaction #1

4 Vicks Sinex Liquicaps 20 ct. @ $5 each
2 Puffs Tissues @ $1.99 each
- 4) $4/1 Sinex coupons from the 12/26 P&G
- 2) FREE Puffs Tissues wyb 2 Vicks 11/28 P&G (exp.12/31) (-$3.98)
- Walgreens in-ad coupon making the tissues $0.89 each (-$2.20)
Paid: $1.62 OOP (after -0.18 tax)
Got Back:
$10 RR for spending $20 on Vicks
Final Cost: 4 Vicks and 2 Tissues for FREE + $8.38 moneymaker!!!
** Be sure to hand over the Walgreens in-ad coupon for the tissues last. This may also depend on your cashier. Also, I saw the same tissues for $1.69 at a few stores, so your amount may depend on the price at your store.

Transaction #2

Holiday Gift Sack @ $0.12 (50% Clearance) <-- filler!

3 Cascade Gel Detergents 60oz @ $3.99
(sale price)
- 3) .25/1 coupons from the 11/28 or 12/26 P&G
- $2 RR received when you spend $10 on Cascade
Final Cost: $3.07 each

Paid:
$10 RR earned on first transaction + $1.45 OOP (.11 tax)
Got Back: $2 RR for spending $10 on Cascade
** Did NOT expect this RR to print since I used a P&G RR to pay for it, but it did!!

That means I only paid $3.07 total out of pocket for both transactions --AND-- got back $2 towards another trip. So I got everything in both transactions for just $1.07!! I ran this deal 3 different times at 3 different stores and now I'm fully stocked on Cascade and tissue for a grand total of $3.21 for everything you see in the picture!! That's $0.36 per Cascade and everything else for FREE!! And I'll donate the Sinex to family members who need it. Happiness!

NOTE: If you're hoping to run this deal, you'll have to be quick. The FREE Puffs coupons expire tomorrow 12/31.

Dollar General: FREE Olay Body Wash + Lotion!

Dollar General apparently has select Olay body washes on sale for $2 dollars. Here's how you can score both the body wash AND a lotion for FREE!

Buy 1 Olay Body Wash @ $2
Buy 1 Olay Lotion @ $5.50
- $2/1 coupon from the 12/26 P&G
- FREE Olay lotion wyb body wash coupon 11/28 P&G (exp. 12/31)
Final Cost: Both FREE!!

"Extreme Couponing" on TLC

So here are my thoughts on the new special "Extreme Couponing" which aired on TLC last night. To be honest, I was nervous about watching it. Maybe it's just my paranoid personality, but I was sure it was going to be a disaster. Either the show would be awesome and educational, in which case I'd be stuck in line behind 20 new couponers tomorrow at Walgreens. Or the show would be negative and unfair, and paint couponers in a bad light.

Overall, I think the special was more balanced than I expected it to be, though it was still extreme and unrealistic and grossly uneducational. They at least showed a variety of shoppers. Some were more "extreme" than others.

#1 was clearly on the wrong show -- they should've cast her for Hoarders instead. Her stockpile was overwhelmingly large, particularly since it was only designed to support 2 people. I think the fact that her purchases have continued to overflow beyond their stockroom signals that something is wrong. I felt bad for her when she started crying and having a near break-down in the store. She needs help, honestly. I also felt sorry for her husband -- give his man cave back!! LOL

#2
Krazy Coupon Lady was most like me, though still a little on the extreme side that day. I'm pretty sure with her stockpile, she doesn't shop like that every week, though. And speaking of her stockpile, I'm so jealous! Would I dumpster dive for coupons? Absolutely! Do I tell my children they can't have something they want in the store because I don't have a coupon for it? Yes! But I do occasionally let them have something special... and when I find a coupon for something I know they love, I SUPER STOCK UP!! I profile my cashiers too! There's nothing worse than being stuck in a store with a cart full of groceries and NO decent cashiers to choose from! LOL Do I wait until someone new comes on shift?? :P

#3 The Coupon Diva was funny and down to earth. She was the shopper most should aspire to be. She gets what she needs and still saves a TON of money. I loved that she was putting other shoppers straight in the store! LOL I've wanted to do that -- it's sad to see people pay full price!! And she was so happy at check-out -- so cute!

#4 was clearly just going for the "WOW" factor, as evidenced by his picking up toothbrushes by the arm-full without even counting them. Unheard of! He knew what he was doing and he wasn't crazy. But nobody shops like that (not even him, I'm sure). That was just for the show. I wish they had mentioned that he donated it all. And I wish they had included the cost spent with the clipping service in all the shopping totals -- that was seriously misleading!

I'll be honest -- I hope they don't do another show about couponing. The blogs and forums are great because they show people who are "actively looking" to save money how to use coupons. But to teach it on a MASS scale to such a broad audience makes me nervous. And I personally don't trust people making "TV" shows for "ENTERTAINMENT" purposes with educating the masses. They were showing "extreme" cases, "shelf-clearing", and other ways of couponing which I don't agree with. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, but for now, I'm breathing a sigh of relief that it's over.

Happy Holidays from Frugal Darling and Family!

Here's wishing you and your loved ones a very Happy Holiday season and a Blessed New Year! Santa brought us an early gift of sniffles and sneezes, so we'll be nursing colds, sipping hot cocoa, and snuggling this Christmas Eve. But God is good and Jesus is the reason for the season. We hope each and every one of you have a wonderful Christmas!

Recipe: Christmas Trash

Here's one of our favorite Holiday treats! My kids absolutely gobble this stuff up. I think the original recipe for this one is called "White Trash" but being a poor white girl from the south, I kinda take offense to that, so we call it Christmas Trash instead.

Christmas Trash

Ingredients:
1 Box Rice Chex Cereal 12.8 oz.
1 Bag Holiday M&M's 8.5 oz.
1/2 bag Mini Twist Pretzels
1 Bag White Chocolate chips 24 oz.
1 tbsp. canola or vegetable oil

Mix first three ingredients in a large bowl - set aside. Place white chocolate chips in a separate mircowave-safe bowl and microwave, uncovered, on medium-high for 1 minute. Stir. Continue microwaving for 10-15 second intervals, stirring just until chips are melted. Add oil and stir well. Pour melted chocolate over dry ingredients and gently turn all ingredients until coated. Spread coated pieces out on wax paper and allow to set. Break into pieces and store in an airtight container.

IKEA | Kids Eat Free 12/26 - 1/9

Starting Sunday (12/26) kids eat FREE at IKEA. Choose one combo meal valued at $2.49. Children under 12 only. Child must be present. Limit one combo meal per child. No purchase necessary. Offer available through 1/9.

Unfortunately for me, this deal isn't available at IKEA Houston, so no free Kids meal for us. But we can still score their awesome 99 cent breakfast or a few of their 50 cent hot dogs!
I love IKEA!

FREE Blockbuster Express Code (12/23 -12/24)

Wanna snag a FREE movie rental for the holiday? Just enter code THANKU during checkout at any Blockbuster Express Kiosk to receive a FREE night's rental. Code valid on December 23rd and December 24th only! (12/23/10 and 12/24/10)

Just remember, the DVD must be returned by 9 pm the following night to avoid a $1 extra day charge, so if you rent on Christmas Eve, you'll want to make sure you can return it on Christmas Day. Most places are open year-round these days, but it's always smart to ask.
